Beached

ã2007 by Ross Matteson   bronze and reinforced concrete, Milestone

67 high x 74 long x 38 wide (inches) life-size bronze eagle

Beached combines two iconic symbols of the Northwest. The American Bald Eagle and Northwest Indian dugout cedar canoe. For me, they each represent a very different kind of beauty. In this composition, though, they come together to make a narrative. Perhaps 200 years ago a juvenile eagle lands a salmon. Being wet and heavy from her plunge into cold salt water, she swims to the shore and takes up a nearby perch on the bow of a recently beached canoe.
