Byrd 2002 is a tribute to Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia for his persistent questioning in the United States Senate at a time when there was overwhelming support among his collegues for the Iraq War. The metaphor of "flying against the wind" is relevant to anyone in a minority position. Upon seeing a picture of this piece, Senator Byrd wrote to me "I often feel like I am 'flying against the wind' in certain instances in my work here in the U.S. Senate. You really brightened my day! Again, thank you. I wish you and your family all the best."
This unique sculpture in my shorebird series was donated to the Washington State League of Women Voters in support of their annual fundraising campaign.
